A couple of years back I had a heart to heart chat with Jude about being passionate about something... ANYTHING! It didn't matter to me, I just wanted some life out of this child.
I have never tried to compare my two boys or size them up against each other. Their obvious differences were, well obvious. VERY different boys, these two.
So, with having one child who knows clearly what he likes and wants (has all his birthdays planned out, knows who he wants to be for Halloween and how this look will be achieved, knows what his interests are in reading, fashion, etc)... I was finding it difficult that my other child was not so clear on such matters.
After having this chat... he continued along on this path of non-chalantness, easy-going, I love everything in life mentality. Nothing specific, much less passionate, was revealing itself within him.
Nontheless, what I didn't know was that this child was developing into such a unique little perfectionist...
When given a guitar and after having a few lessons under his belt, he was able to pick out runs by sound... check!
When taught to read music on the keyboard, he compared the two instruments up against each other and could transfer songs from one instrument to the other (without sheets ~)... check!
When interested in origami, he researched and mastered several techniques... check!
After becoming a fan of Michael Jackson, he researched the moon walk and practiced it until he got it... along with the lyrics to Thriller... check!
Moving onto magic (we are still in the magic phase)... he studies daily different 'slights of hands' and 'mental magic' techniques. He has even caused his dad some frustrations and has caused me some pause... check!
He and I took a towel folding class once and he requested the book to learn to make more animals... check!
After reading and studying about Helen Keller and her unique ability to sign... well, you guessed it. He researched and learned the sign alphabet. He hasn't learned words and expressions so he spells out EVERYTHING he is saying and wants you to understand him! Good Grief!
He has recently revisited hoola-hooping. What started as a friendly competition between him and his brother (who could have the highest number of hoops!) turned in to him wanting to know who has the record. We now know that the record for the longest hoola-hooping is over 72 hours. (If interested, this type of record setting must be videoed with audio). And Jude thought that his 1000 turns without stopping was impressive!
We just arrived back home from our road trip vacation. Many days were spent in the water. Jude was asked to compete in a breath holding contest 9under water) at his uncle's house. Thirty seconds later he popped up. He didn't win and this gave birth to the idea of learning to stay under water the longest. His top record before leaving the beach was 75 seconds... and he was beating any who accepted the challenge.
So, now, where does this leave us on his journey to become passionate about something? Who knows? But in Jude's case, he will try out many things before he settles on his passion.
I am incredibly blessed and so very thankful to have had the opportunities to witness his and Luke's unique talents and abilities...
