Yesterday, we finally got around to creating a makeshift habitat for these creepy crawlies. I have had these worms sitting around in a plastic container since Sunday and haven't been able to complete the project since we didn't have any sand. However, yesterday, as we were heading to the orthodontist, we pulled off on a public access to get to the riverbank behind Tanglewood Park.
We scooped up our sand and headed to tighten Luke's braces. At home we put together all the required parts and now are anticipating the results. Upon observation bright and early this morning, the boys noticed that the layers were already breaking up and the soil was becoming more uniform... thus identifying what the role of these worms are in our soil. After two weeks we should have some pretty good worm castings, along with our worms, to put our in our flower beds.
I couldn't help but think about how this little observation for the boys and these worms is sort of reflective of how this year will be for us. We too are 'finding our niche'. We have left what is traditional, what is conventional for modern day learning. We are in a new environment and we are 'working through the layers'. Hopefully and prayerfully we will close out the school year with a nice little mixture of fun and learning... I guess we'll just wait and see!
